Rights Respecting Schools

We have the right to know our rights.

At Hafod Primary School, we work hard on promoting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The universal rights of children are enshrined in the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child. We are a Rights Respecting School and the first school in Wales to receive the Level 2 award.
First minister Carwyn Jones presented the award to the pupils.
‘A Rights Respecting School teaches children and young people that they have rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. From this
starting point they also learn their responsibility to respect others' rights in all relationships in the community.
The ethos created demonstrates to children the inclusiveness of a rights respecting school and paves the way to participation in the life of the community.
This in turn helps them to learn how to formulate, express and listen to opinions, helping to raise achievement.’ (UNICEF)

At Hafod, we have 10 core Rights which we view to be at the heart of our school ethos.

1. The right to know our rights.
2. The right to learn.
3. The right to play
4. The right to be safe.
5.The right to a voice and be included in decision making
6. The right to be heard.
7. The right to be healthy.
8. The right to our own thoughts, religions and culture
9. The right to a name and identity
10.The right to a family

Ronnie our Rights Respecting Raindrop is all around the school, he also visits us in our homes and tells us about his trips around the World.

There are 54 articles laid down under the Convention that have to be provided by adults. They are unconditional. However, the Convention also refers to the responsibilities of children. Responsibilities accompany rights, and our school rules are based upon them.
